![]() The Scripps Miramar Ranch Library Center is one of 35 branches of the San Diego Public Library. Staffed by 5 full-time, 10 part-time, and numerous volunteer workers, the Library Center provides a wide range of services to the community. The public service area at the front of the Library includes a large circulation desk, an indoor book drop for returning materials, a community bulletin board, a display of free materials, a photocopy alcove, and restrooms. Computer catalogs located throughout the Library provide up-to-date access to the San Diego Public Library system holdings as well as information about resources at public and academic libraries located throughout San Diego County. Next to the circulation desk is the Ellen Browning Scripps Foundation Computer Laboratory, which provides opportunities for learning and use of both Macintosh and IBM-compatible personal computers and printers. A video previewing area is located in front of the Computer Lab. Supplementing the 6 Internet-connected computers located in the Computer Lab, 7 additional Internet-connected computers are located in the main part of the Library, adjacent to the circulation desk. All 13 computers are available for use by library patrons on a sign-up basis, and are equipped with "parental control" filters in order to provide safe access to the Internet. The library is also equipped with free Wi-Fi access to the Internet, to which patrons can connect with their personal laptop computers. The Children's Area houses books, paperbacks, magazines, audio cassettes, video cassettes, and DVDs for children. The Children's Amphitheater, in the building's south corner, provides a dramatic setting for storytelling and other programs. The Great Room, with its vaulted and trussed ceiling houses the library's fiction collection, new book display, and a browsing collection of audio cassettes, video cassettes, DVDs, and compact disks. The Magazine and Newspaper Collection as well as the Reference Section are also located in the Great Room. Through the arches, adjacent to the Great Room, are the adult reading area with fireplace and the library's adult non-fiction and biography sections. The Young Adult collection, composed of fiction and non-fiction books, audio and video tapes and DVDs, is located between the Adult Biography section and the Children's Amphitheater. Not to be missed is the Tower Room, a small, enclosed area located directly beneath the Library's tower, which provides an environment suitable for group study. Located near the Library's magazine collection is Grace's Book Nook, a Scripps Ranch Friends of the Library bookstore, which offers used books and other items for sale as an ongoing fund raising effort to support the Library. The Library Center's lighted courtyard, furnished with tables, chairs, and benches, provides both a secured area for outdoor reading and an entry area for the Community Room. The names of library donors are inscribed on pavers in the courtyard. Information of the paver donation program is available at the circulation desk. The Community Room, which holds up to 300 people for group programs and events, features a stage, a grand piano, film and video projection capabilities, and a complete catering kitchen. A lighted outdoor patio, with access to the parking lot, is located on the northwest side of the Community Room. An adjacent Seminar Room, which can hold up to 30 people and which provides computer video projection capabilities, is also available for public use. By closing a sliding partition, the Seminar Room can be divided into two private meeting rooms which can hold up to 15 people each. We hope that you enjoy your visit to the Scripps Miramar Ranch Library Center. We are looking forward to seeing you here often! |
